South Carolina Big Red Citadel US Historic 3×5 Flag

$9.98

The Big Red Flag was also known as the Citadel Flag and “Star of the West Flag.” In January 1861, South Carolina was keeping a close watch over the Charleston harbor for Union ships attempting to slip in and bring supplies and troops to Fort Sumter. The Citadel Cadets built a battery on Morris Island to help protect the harbor. Several cadets had chosen to man the cannon instead of taking their final exams. Little did they know that they would make history that night when they fired the first shot at the Union ship “Star of the West” as it attempted to slip through the harbor under cover of darkness.
